Monetary general equilibrium with transaction costs

چکیده

Commodity money arises endogenously in a general equilibrium model with separate budget constraints for each transaction. Transaction costs imply differing bid and ask (selling and buying) prices. The most liquid good—with the smallest proportionate bid/ask spread—becomes commodity money. General equilibrium may not be Pareto efficient. If zero-transaction-cost money is available then the equilibrium allocation is Pareto efficient. Fiat money is an intrinsically worthless instrument. Its positive price comes from acceptability in paying taxes, and its use as a medium of exchange is based on low transaction cost. © 2003 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Why Is There Money? Convergence to a Monetary Equilibrium in a General Equilibrium Model with Transaction Costs by Ross

This paper presents a class of examples where a nonmonetary economy converges in a tatonnement process to a monetary equilibrium. Exchange takes place in organized markets characterized by an array of trading posts where each pair of goods may be traded for one another. A barter equilibrium with m commodities is characterized by m(m-1)/2 commodity pair trading posts, most of which host active t...

Why Is There Money? Endogenous Derivation of 'money' as the Most Liquid Asset: a Class of Examples by Ross

This essay derives the monetary character of trade, the existence of a common medium of exchange, as an outcome of the economic general equilibrium in a class of examples. The setting is a (non-monetary) Arrow-Debreu Walrasian model with the addition of two constructs: multiple budget constraints (one at each transaction) and transaction costs. The multiplicity of budget constraints creates a d...

2000-25r University of California, San Diego Department of Economics Why Is There Money? Endogenous Derivation of 'money' as the Most Liquid Asset: a Class of Examples

The monetary character of trade, the existence of a common medium of exchange, is derived as an outcome of the economic general equilibrium in a class of examples. Two constructs are added to an Arrow-Debreu general equilibrium model: market segmentation with multiple budget constraints (one at each transaction) and transaction costs. The multiplicity of budget constraints creates a demand for ...

Existence and Uniqueness of 'Money' in General Equilibrium: Natural Monopoly in the Most Liquid Asset

The monetary character of trade, use of a common medium of exchange, is shown to be an outcome of economic general equilibrium in the presence of transaction costs and market segmentation (in trading posts with a separate budget constraint at each transaction). Commodity money arises endogenously as the most liquid (lowest transaction cost) asset. Scale economies in transaction cost account for...

Legal Analysis of bank in the Iranian commercial market based on the theory of transaction costs

Understanding the necessity of establishing a bank in Iran requires a correct realizing of the mechanism of the money market in an era in which banks had no place or position.
